The United States and The Paris Agreement: The Estrangement

Annie Conners

The United States, once a global leader, has yet again put its reputation at stake. Leaving the Paris Agreement indefinitely makes certain the destruction of infrastructure, the displacement of millions, and the demolition of our one and only Earth.

On June 1st, 2017, President of the United States, Donald J. Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement. To contextualize, the Paris Agreement is a diplomatic, cooperative effort to mitigate the complications of climate change, with an overall objective of reversing climate change’s effects. The agreement seeks to accomplish these goals through global support and by sparking innovation to seek ways to continue a civilian lifestyle while being more green.

This is where things get hectic. The United States leaving the Paris Agreement makes them one of the few countries to not ratify it. This sets a poor precedent for international cooperation to resolve climate change. In addition, the United States is a global leader. This withdrawal challenges the confidence that other countries have in the Paris Agreement, while simultaneously undermining the universality of the agreement. This agreement cannot be accomplished without global agreement.

The only solution to this issue is to persuade the President of the United States to rejoin the Paris Agreement. Within the next few months, a transition of power in the United States will take place. This will make the ratification of the Paris Agreement less bleak, but support from constituents goes a long way in the United States. Support the Paris Agreement, there is no “Planet B”.
