Soapy Sustainability

Kyra K

We often feel like we as individuals cannot make much of a difference to help the environment. However, there are a few simple steps you can take to reduce your impact on the environment while getting clean. First, turn off the shower when soaping up. Letting the shower run while you put on soap is like leaving the tap running while you brush your teeth! Conserve water by reducing the amount of time you let it flow. Another way to save water in the shower is low flow shower heads; these will also reduce your water bill by increasing your water use efficiency.

If you are a bath lover, limit the frequency of your baths are they often waste more water than showers (to test this, plug your tub during a shower and see how much water you use during a shower versus a bath). If you have a green thumb, keep a bucket in your shower to collect extra water for gardening use. Finally, reducing the amounts of showers you take is an obvious way to conserve water. Or reduce the

number of times you wash your hair in the shower, as this will extend your shower time.
