Around the U.S., kids from every state get ready for the sweetest holiday of the year: Halloween. With this holiday, they finally have an excuse to eat whatever sweet candy they want, but it comes with a price that many don’t see.

During Halloween, approximately five billion dollars' worth of candy is sold, and with that

amount of candy comes a lot of waste. Much of this waste is single use plastic, and it is

extremely harmful to the environment for a multitude of reasons. Plastic that has been dumped into the landfill can end up in unexpected and more dangerous places for the environment. It can end up in forests or even lakes through careless littering.

Candy isn’t the sole reason that Halloween has a negative impact on the environment though. Approximately 82.5 percent of Halloween costumes contain plastic. Even though this seems dreadful, there are solutions to this problem. Instead of going out and buying new costumes every year, people can reuse old ones, make their own while being environmentally conscious, or thrift for the needed pieces. Through doing things such as those stated above, we can minimize the negative impact on the environment Halloween has.
