Avocados are Instagram’s new favorite health food. Everywhere you look, people are posting pictures of their aesthetic-looking avocado toast. This popular fruit produces a lot of waste, though. The inedible skins and pits pile up quickly, and most end up getting burned in landfills. Mexico in particular has a vast amount of waste from avocados. They produce around 50 percent of the world’s avocados and end up with the waste from 300,000 pounds of these fruits per year (livekindly).
A Mexican company has come up with a unique solution to tackle this problem. Based in Morelia, Mexico, BIOFASE produces disposable cutlery from avocado waste. This biodegradable product faces both the problem of avocado byproducts and the incredible amount of plastic spoons, forks, straws, etc. filling our landfills. They can degrade in just 240 days as opposed to regular plastic, which can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. This new cutlery is made up of 60% avocado and 40% organic compounds (simplemost).
This is a relatively new product, so only time will tell if avocado plastic will become a popular alternative to synthetic plastics. But this new technology certainly looks promising. It recycles waste, does not require any sort of special recycling process, and can even be composted at home. You can do your part to reduce our waste by considering using these and other biodegradable products. They have significantly less impact on our environment and an innovative solution to some of our waste problems.
